25 Before leaving Kansas City, Smith promised to send for band members when he found work in New York. Smith left Charlie in charge of the band. Without Buster’s fatherly influence, Charlie resumed abusing drugs and alcohol. The band quickly fell apart and Charlie returned to freelancing. In November 1938, Charlie joined the Jay McShann band at Clair Martin’s Plaza Tavern. Jay Columbus McShann, trim with an engaging grin, hailed from Muskogee, Oklahoma. A masterful pianist who ranged effortlessly from barrelhouse to modern styles, McShann began his career in Oklahoma and the southwestern territories.
