Drill a pilot hole for each screw. ATTACH THE CANVAS SEAT & BACK The sling-style seat and back canvas panels are secured to the frame by rolling one side of the canvas around one rail and then sandwiching that rail between a second rail and the backrest. Machine screws secure the rails to the backrest. Cut the seat and back canvas rails to length if you have not already cut them. Cut the canvas seat and back to size, keeping the factory-seamed edges in the exposed position when possible. With the right side on a table, fold up 1/4" of material along one long side of the canvas and then press.
Lay out cutting lines for the notches, which are 3/4" deep × 4" long and will be cut on the two top corners of the leg blanks. Also lay an upside-down V that is 5" wide and 3" tall and centered on the bottom of each leg (photo 1). Use a speed square or a framing square like the one shown here to mark the notched cutouts for the bottom of the legs. These are important for both the look and the stability of the bench. Clamp the leg to a sturdy work surface and cut out the notches and the Vs with a jigsaw or hand saw (photo 2).
The final frame parts to cut are the corbels that support the outside edge of the armrest. Cut the two corbels to length and then draw the arc profile on each corbel and cut along the arc line with a jigsaw. ASSEMBLE THE FRAME Sand all faces of every workpiece smooth before beginning the assembly process. Attach the backrests to the back legs with 1 1/4" stainless steel screws (photo 4). The backrest should be square with the top edge of the back half of the back leg. Attach the backrest braces to the backrests with 2" stainless steel screws and finish washers (photo 5).
