The newspapers were found by online searches of yellow pages for the relevant city or county. Three papers reported on multiple cases: the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Sentinel, and the Tampa Tribune. In three cases, stories from two daily papers were collected, rather than just the nearest one to the crime. This decision was made in the interest of collecting the fullest possible coverage of the incidents. In five cases, a larger regional daily paper was chosen over the local daily. This was done for ease of access to the stories and to provide a cross-section of newspaper sizes.
This offers credibility to the issue and to the story. Finally, the media uses typification. This is the presentation of information in a way that exaggerates the frequency of an event and/or meets its organizational goals, which primarily revolve around maximizing readers or viewers. While the four techniques used by the media as primary claimsmakers are all important, the reliance on official sources is of special significance.
