Gardening in Iowa and Surrounding Areas (Bur Oak Book)
At the East Coast, so the tale is going, rookies are requested the place they come from; at the West Coast they're requested what they do for a dwelling; in Iowa humans ask them, “How's your backyard doing? ” might be this isn't a real tale, however it does epitomize the significance of gardening for Iowans, blessed as they're with the wealthy glacial soil so hospitable to corn and soybeans.

If the integrity of the design requires you to drop the siding below the tops of the pie rs, you can form the outsid e face of each pier so that it will b e flush with the face of the post. However, this procedure affects the strength of the pie rs and brings the siding b elow recommended earth -, wood clearances (which may not pertain if the siding is pressure-treated). If you want to do this, get help from the local bUilding d epartment or from a professional builder or designer. Aside from these issues, the footings and pie rs follow typical construction techniques for decks.
Then measure and c ut ve rtical studs to fit between the bottom plate and the 2 by 4 cap. Nail the m in place, 16 inches on center, and toenail the m to the stringe rs as we ll. Nail sheathing or siding to the frame work in the same way you would apply e xte rior siding (although bUilding pape r is not necessary). If you're using shingles, shakes, or stucco, you should install C DX or similar plywood sheathing first. Install horizontal wood siding or plywood siding directly to the studs. Afte r the siding or sheathing is installed, you can trim the top of the railing with a 2 by 8 cap and 1 by 4 trim on the side.
Separating the platforms by 3 feet or more also creates an inte resting inte raction between the m. The upper 58 platform feels like an observation deck that oversees activity in the lowe r area, and the lower deck has a magnetic quality that invites closer e xploration. This difference between the two leve ls creates a dynamic and versatile space. The shape of the d eck has a number of advantages. If the house shades a pote ntial deck site, this deck may e xte nd far enough outward to capture precious sunlight.
