In the early 1990s the NCAR Climate System Model (CSM) was developed which had components contributed to by many researchers. This model is designed to be used by a large number of scientists as a tool for climate research as well as an organizing project for continued improvements in model components. The model was first written for vector supercomputer systems and later a DOE-supported version was developed, called the Parallel Climate Model (PCM) that was specifically designed for parallel computer systems.
