For Mead, perceiving, thinking, and knowing are not apprehensions of a prestructured world; rather, by them the world that is there and experienced at the precognitive level takes on new meanings, new forms, new structures, and new characteristics. Since there is evolution, there is the emergence of novel, unpredictable characters of things; and mind, according to Mead, enters into the creative advance of nature. It emerged from nature and is a part of nature and not something that reflects, apprehends, or intuits what is there apart from it.
Mead does not claim that the individual begins his reasoning by a knowledge or an awareness of the self and “subjective” contents. Rather, that of which the individual is first aware is also indicatable to and sharable by an other. There may be a legitimate distinction between “subjective” and “objective,” but that distinction cannot be made without first starting with a common perspective shared by members of the community. Private perspectives arise out of a common perspective which is not made up from a collection of private perspectives.
Furthermore, the generalized other is flexible, even as the attitudes of members of the community are flexible.
