Because the transconductance of the vacuum tube diode is described by a power function, the vacuum tube diode exhibits a much more gradual turn-on characteristic than the PN junction diode, which has exponential transconductance behavior. 1 Technically, the space charge region occupies the entire space between the cathode and the anode, but unless a forward bias is applied to the tube, virtually all of the electrons remain very close to the cathode surface.
