When faced with a complex question like that, the need to work out exactly what you are being asked to do is very apparent. You should get into the habit of thinking about what the question is really asking even when you look at ‘simple’ titles. It’s always possible that the focus of the question is not really on the most prominent subject in the title. For example, in the ‘urban conscience’ question, to what extent are you being asked to comment on James’s original work? What does the word ‘it’ apply to in the last part of the question?
May not be presented to a high standard in the style appropriate to the assignment. A poor answer that reveals limited knowledge and understanding of the subject but nevertheless recognizes some of the main issues raised by the assignment. Must provide a relevant answer, but may include serious errors, omissions or irrelevant material. May lack any evidence of independent thought. Arguments may lack evidence, and there may be no Contd WHAT WILL THE EXAMINERS BE LOOKING FOR WHEN THEY MARK MY ESSAY?
Once you have worked out what your essay is about and memorized the title, then you can usefully do nothing for a while. Eric says: Can I say in my tutorial report that I’ve spent the week usefully doing nothing? The idea of doing nothing for a while is to let the essay simmer away on the back burner of your subconscious. During this time, everything that you read, or hear in a lecture, or see on the television news, or notice in the world around you will be filtered through the subconscious of the same mind that is subconsciously remembering your essay.
