This means, from the perspective of the present study, that even in those relatively unformed early days when Bergman was handed the imaginative work of others to translate onto the screen, he nonetheless managed to put himself into the finished products, from the beginning making film a personal expression, revealing his own psyche and obsessions, his own relating to the culture.
