Previous studies of the surfaces of films cast from a dilute monodisperse, "model" latex have found hexagonal arrays of particles . In the more practical, concentrated and somewhat poly disperse latex systems that we studied, disordered packing emerged . Although it has long been realised that an optically transparent latex can contain voids with sizes below the wavelength of light, ESEM provided some of the first clear images of their size, shape and extent. Optical measurements corroborated these findings by providing evidence for the development of surface roughness and density decreases with the evaporation of water.
