But for early settlers, the demands of daily life left little if any leisure for enjoyment of nature’s gifts. Many years would pass before the idea of Sarasota as a resort for winter visitors became a viable notion. The area that was to include Sarasota gained identity in the 1840s when the first white settlers came to Hillsborough County, later subdivided to create Manatee and then Sarasota counties. Previously, only Spanish conquistadors, Cuban fishermen, and Indians had visited the area. When the Second Seminole War ended in 1842, the huge Indian territories of South Florida were open to settlement.
