We've Captured the Cave ofMachpelah' is a satirical comment on the British occupation of Hebron during the 1914-18 war. Hebron was captured by the British troops under General Allenby advancin~ towards Jerusalem. In Hebron is located the Cave of Machpelah, celebrated as the burial place of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Times reported the fall of Hebron in its issue for December 8, 1917. O'Casey's son~s were usually written quite close to the events they celebrated. He sent an unpublished poem on the death of John Redmond, leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, to O'Connor on March 9, 1918, three days after Redmond's death on March 6.
