You've got a bag ready to go if you need it, which is the most important thing. Once you start packing gear into your bag, you're going to notice things you do and don't like about the bag. This will give you a baseline to use when you start shopping for a better bag. You can upgrade the bag later once you've narrowed down your needs. There are two things you ideally want your bug out bag to be. That's lightweight and durable. In the cheaper bags, those two items are mutually exclusive of one another.
Could you survive a week, a month or even a year in the wild? With the right supplies and little luck, you probably could. If there are lakes, rivers or even small streams nearby, you're going to want a way to harvest the fish in them. You could build traps or try to spear fish swimming close to shore, but catching them with fishing line is a heck of a lot easier. I recommend keeping two types of fishing line in your bug out bag. Keep a light 6- to 8-pound test monofilament and a heavy 60- to 80-pound braid.
If you have a strong back and need to carry a lot of gear, you can go as high as 80L. Just be aware a bag of this size is going to be extremely heavy if you fill it up. Some Bags You May Want to Consider It's tough to decide which backpack to buy, especially when you consider the fact that a good hiking backpack can cost you hundreds of dollars. Here's a list of some bags you may want to consider: Osprey Hornet (Approximately $130 to $170) This super light bag comes in two sizes: 24L and 46L. The larger of the two sizes weighs in at just over a pound.
